6th April 10-4pm

Looking forwards to my debut Botanical Illustration workshop with the Truro Art Company. On this course those attending will have a fabulous experience of learning all about my approach to beginning a new artwork. I will take the class through a range of techniques, including basic drawing and observational skills, to the rendering and process I use when working on my Illustrations.

Bringing an array of interesting Botanical subjects to draw and paint, each person will be taken through a step by step journey into a cathartic study. My workshop will be on the airy and light mezzanine floor at the Truro Art Company, with an interlude for lunch at the adjoining café.

Throughout the day I will welcome any discussions on my practice and will look forwards to sharing tips and advice. Over the years I have found that one of the most fundamental skills in creating a realistic Botanical Illustration is to thoroughly observe your subject matter. A good starting point is to have a really close look at your chosen specimen before making the initial sketches.

As I will reiterate during the class, it is a common problem for the artist to draw what they perceive to be a true likeness with almost a bit of guess work! Whilst this is a completely orthodox way of working in many other genres of art, when trying to produce a hyper-real Illustration, it is imperative to create an accurate representation. Which is not as terrifying as it may seem! In fact most people find themselves happily absorbed in their artworks whilst striking up the most wonderful conversations with like minded people in the class.

I will cover various strategies to give each artist the confidence to take away what they have learnt in my workshop and apply to many other aspects of painting and drawing. The workshops always seem to attract some really fascinating people and I’m sure this one will be no exception.
