Delightful Dahlias

Delightful Dahlias

The Galerie Botanique Collection

I thought this month, I would take the opportunity to write about one of the products featured on the website. Since the Dahlia cushion seems to be proving popular it made sense to focus on this classic choice, and what a delight it is. Dahlias just never cease to amaze me in all their fabulous glory, an array of dazzling colours and different  forms they cannot help make one smile.

Inspiration

After quite literally years in my youth of dreams of becoming a Fashion Designer, and an obsession  with Interior Design, finally it has come to a point where I have taken the plunge and had my Artwork printed onto fabric. Each cushion made is inspired initially from a unique Botanical Illustration that I have produced. I then consider carefully the best composition to use within a square format of the cushion sizing, to showcase each design.

Focusing on key fashion trends from the world of Interior Design, and taking into consideration products of fine traditional origins but with a contemporary artistic flair. I have come up with a laid back elegant style, to suit most colour schemes from both contemporary and classic homes.

Dahlia

The Dahlia cushion is part of ‘The Galerie Botanique Collection’ being the first in a new range for this series. The original Illustration came from a series of line drawings I was commissioned to draw for The Eden Project in Cornwall. This of which is used on their signage in the Dahlia Garden, in the grounds outside the Biomes.

The Semi Cactus featured, was one of my favourites from the Eden Project commission, I very much enjoyed the fine lined details in the drawing. Not to mention the rather spectacular spiky petals and the dense layers of a star like form are particularly eye catching. In all honesty though, they are all pretty eye catching, and some of them are real devils to draw! Complex geometric forms, especially in the pom-pom or ball varieties were a real challenge to illustrate, literally one petal in the wrong place could have thrown the entire drawing out. Although having said that, it’s those exquisite complexities and details that I am always somehow drawn to when choosing a subject matter to Illustrate.
