The RHS Lindley Library

The RHS Lindley Library

Time out from the Studio

This month I have been out of my studio in Cornwall and leaving this fabulous coastline behind to venture further a field. Travelling up to London, portfolio in hand to deliver a series of my artworks to the RHS at the Lindley Library, Westminster.

In this particular series there are four A2 artworks, each rendered in my usual favoured colour pencil and gouache. I find this a great way of creating the depth of vibrancy to the colours I achieve and also a wonderful way of having super control of the details so synonymous with my artworks.

Presentation and Artworks

The artworks are each presented to strict uniform formats according to the RHS guidelines, which allows a sense of unison when viewing them all as a series. The first piece was the Rose ‘Comte de Chambord’ which I spoke about in one of my previous posts.

A delightful subject matter and was the first in the larger size Botanical Artworks that I have painted. Having always been far more comfortable drawing very small artworks working on a larger  scale has been a turning point as an artist. With the new given freedom of a larger space to fill I can now concentrate even further on the details, which I just adore!

Artworks on a theme

So with a series of four, the latter three were on a theme of coastal plants, typical of the south west of England. I chose to Illustrate ‘Agapanthus, Praecox‘, ‘Sea Holly,Eryngium maritium‘ and ‘Hydrangea, Endless Summer‘. These are all plants that grow where I live and over the years have provided me with a continuous source of inspiration. This is just the beginning of the collection of artworks I hope to paint.
